About us

Who we are

Welcome to the York Improving access to psychological therapies (IAPT) service.

IAPT is a national NHS programme designed to increase the availability of talking therapy treatments recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

It is believed that one in four people experience mental ill health at some point in their lives.

Significant events like bereavement, unemployment, relationship breakdown, traumatic events or even stress at work can lead to difficulties requiring help and support. Problems with low mood and anxiety can develop and make it difficult for us to cope with life’s daily demands.

IAPT seeks to use the least intrusive method of care possible to treat people. This is often called a ‘stepped care model’ and means that the patient is generally offered a low-intensity therapy in the first instance. Examples of low-intensity treatment would include computerised cognitive behavioral therapy (cCBT), psycho-educational courses, guided self-help – over the phone or face to face.

If low-intensity treatments are unsuccessful or inappropriate then patients can be ‘stepped up’ to a high-intensity therapy. This often takes the form of one-to-one cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

To make sure that the IAPT service is right for you we will first offer you a brief initial assessment. Most are undertaken over the phone, although alternative arrangements can be made if required. At the end of the assessment, we will discuss what help is available within the service.

Where IAPT is not the most suitable service we can signpost you to alternatives where available.

What we do

We provide a range of therapies for people in York aged 17 and over who may be experiencing the following difficulties:

How we deliver services

Our IAPT services are designed to help people in the Vale of York locality with their mental health and wellbeing. We do this by recommending suitable therapies best suited to the problems you are experiencing and the goals that you have set for yourself.

You can be referred by your Vale of York GP after talking to them or you can self-refer online.

After undertaking an assessment with one of our staff, over the telephone we can recommend therapies best suited to your needs. Most people find it most convenient to have their initial assessment over the telephone, but if you need a face to face assessment, please let us know on the enquiry form. At the end of your initial telephone assessment, we will discuss whether the IAPT service is suitable and if so recommend a treatment option for you. These may include:

  • Computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (cCBT)
  • Psycho-educational courses
  • Wellbeing Course
  • Guided self-help over the phone or face to face
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR)

Employment Services

Employment Support is a DWP/NHS funded initiative to provide employment support, information, advice and guidance to clients accessing IAPT treatment plans and who are either in work, in work whilst on sickness leave or unemployed.

It is widely accepted that work is generally good for mental health – including for people with mental health conditions. It is also established that the longer people are absent or out of work, the more likely they are to experience depression and anxiety.

Patients receive psychological therapy through IAPT which is complemented by employment support services, designed to deal specifically with the work-related problems the patient is experiencing. Employment Advisors will provide practical advice and relevant support to assist patients to retain employment and, if off work sick, to help them return to attending work and if unemployed to secure suitable employment.

Types of support available:

  • Identifying relevant job opportunities online/ CV writing/interview techniques etc.
  • Support to complete application forms effectively (written and online)
  • Problem solving relative issues, for example, difficulty in providing previous employer references
  • How to positively explain negating possible work absences. Problem solving for any other issues which may reduce chance of securing or maintaining employment, for example criminal records, health issues etc.
  • Support patient to identify relevant job vacancies and training opportunities online.

Patients will receive support to help understand the financial impact of returning to work (if applicable). For example, Better Off Calculations (BOC) with Employment Advisors liaising with local Job Centre Plus for benefits advice.
